Possibly Hong Kong’s most affordable all-you-can-eat deal can be had at Mr Wong’s in Mong Kok, the exchange-student-beloved restaurant serving unlimited food and drinks for only HKD80.
Since 2007, when Mr Wong (full name Wong Shu Kau) first started offering an unlimited feed of classic Cantonese plates and free-flow beer, the restaurant has nurtured a cult love by waves of European and North American students studying overseas in Hong Kong looking for a deal.
Mr Wong’s, also known as 康樂餐廳 (hong1 lok6 caan1 teng1), meaning “happy and peaceful restaurant,” serves a simple menu of sweet-and-sour pork, steamed garlic broccoli, soy sauce beef, yellow curry chicken, fried spring rolls, and egg fried rice.
The beer served is Kingway, a lager brewed in Shenzhen and stocked only in 330ml cans.
Mr Wong began serving students in 2007 at another venue in Mong Kok when a group of four British exchange students from PolyU chanced upon his restaurant and asked for a menu. When he was unable to understand what they were looking for, he charged the group HKD40 per person for a free-flow of simple Cantonese dishes and beer he had laying around.
In 17 years, the price for the unlimited food and drinks offer has only doubled. Mr Wong moved his restaurant to the current Shamchun Street location in 2012. His eatery is most popular on Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday nights.
