A Deliveroo report exclusive to Foodie has found that Hong Kong’s ordering and dinings habits have changed in recent summers, as the weather dictates what and how we drink and eat.
“There has been a sharp upward trend of beverage and drink orders placed on our platform since the start of the summer in Hong Kong,” a spokesperson from Deliveroo told Foodie.
From Hong Kong’s hot and humid summer beginning this July, 30% more Deliveroo customers are ordering drinks with less or no sugar, whilst 17% more customers are selecting less ice as compared to the winter months.
Deliveroo has seen an average 53% increase in the demand for less or no spicy food during Hong Kong summers, owing to the tepid, sweltering days seen for months. “Popular summer dishes include Thai Chicken & Rice dishes, with a 4x increase in overall orders,” the report stated.
The report also found that “Western options like burgers, pizza, and pasta dishes record an 8% uptick among Hongkongers as consumers prefer dishes that don’t come with hot soup during the summer heat.”
The winter months in Hong Kong saw an increase of 33% of searches for hot dishes like congee. Lamb stew and lamb dishes accounted for 97% and 74% increases respectively compared to summer.
The spokesperson said, “As the trusted delivery platform connecting Hong Kong customers with over 11,000 restaurants, Deliveroo satisfies food cravings and allows customers to explore a diverse selection of restaurants and unbeatable fresh flavours.”
“We will also continue to support our restaurant partners with our insights and data so they can create menus and dish options that fit the needs of Hong Kong diners and satisfy their taste buds.”
