Back in 2017, Foodie Forks Hidden Gem winner Bobby’s Rabble was the reason to drink on Peel Street. But when they opened up a second location on Wyndham, within a few months Peel had lost its “cool” vibe.

Now, unless you’ve been living under a rock, the resurgence of Peel Street as a destination for a night out is clear as day. The reason: Shady Acres. Since it opened its doors back in May of last year, Shady’s has been packed on the daily.

They have all the necessary ingredients to succeed – a great selection of wines, awesome cocktails and bar snacks and a a tasty à-la-carte menu. For me, what keeps customers returning is the atmosphere created by the team. Owners Ryan Nightingale and Mike Watt (no strangers to the HK F&B scene, Nightingale having worked at Aberdeen Street Social and Ham & Sherry and Watt at 208 Duecento Otto and Fish School) have hit the nail on the head. Arriving to Shady’s usually means navigating through the crowds outside on the pavement, and inside the staff are friendly, smiling, happy to be there and working hard to make sure your experience is remembered.

There are no egos here; couples, big groups and solo travellers can enjoy a relaxed environment for kicking back – or not, if you catch my drift.

On top of this, they have one of the best happy hours from 5–7pm. Now, if you miss that, don’t fret – it’s back again from 11pm–1am.

Verdict

Shady Acres arrived without fanfare and built its reputation by providing the trifecta of quality service, a great atmosphere and fantastic food and drink. Get over to Peel and see for yourself.
