Germany is one of the first wine countries to have returned to Hong Kong since our border has reopened. The country had a prominent pavilion with 14 producers at ProWine Hong Kong three weeks ago, and now its global ambassador, the German Wine Queen, is heading our way to celebrate Riesling Weeks Hong Kong with us.

Launched in 2013 and organised by Wines of Germany, Riesling Weeks Hong Kong is a month-long celebration of German wine that takes place each year in June. Together with wine suppliers, the campaign aims to introduce more German wine to HK wine lovers. Leading hotels and restaurants are offering German wine and food pairings, while retailers and wine clubs are hosting wine-tasting events. This year is the 11th anniversary of Riesling Weeks, and the campaign is highly anticipated by wine lovers.

Foodie and Riesling, Hong Kong

Born to a winemaking family, the 74th German Wine Queen, Katrin Lang from Baden, has been working in the vineyards since she was a child. Her passion for wine has grown since then. After completing her studies in viticulture and winemaking, she joined Weingut Zähringer as winemaker. During her stay in Hong Kong, Katrin has a busy schedule, attending various German wine dinners, speaking at the Vocational Training Council and Hong Kong PolyU and conducting guided tastings at Vinothek Berlin, the German wine pop-up shop at Central Market.

White asparagus is a German delicacy grown between mid-April and the end of June. Just as in previous years, Riesling Weeks participants, including Nicholini’s at Conrad Hong Kong, Dot Cod Seafood Restaurant & Oyster Bar, German fine-dining restaurant Heimat by Peter Find and Trattoria Kagawa by Mihara, will be offering the pairing of this seasonal vegetable with German wine.

Enjoy a German wine with any type of cuisine for Riesling Weeks.

German wine pairs well with Asian cuisines. Diners can sample these perfect pairings at Aaharn, where the aromas of Riesling complement the fragrance of Thai ingredients, or at CHAAT at Rosewood Hong Kong, where the exotic flavours of Indian spices alongside Riesling delight the palate. Chinese restaurants including Dynasty 滿福樓Sha Tin 18 and YUE 采悅軒 will also offer German-wine pairing menus.

Schnitzel & Schnaps will feature German sausages and a German wine menu, while Simon Rogan’s chef’s table, Aulis Hong Kong, will offer an interactive dining experience showcasing a German wine-pairing menu. For a fun evening out with friends, the German wine and snack pairing at Mirage Bar & Restaurant at Renaissance Hong Kong Harbour View Hotel is not to be missed.

Vinothek Berlin, Hong Kong’s first German wine-experience pop-up store, debuted in 2021, and it will be returning as part of Riesling Weeks Hong Kong. The location this time is Central Market. In addition to the around 100 German wines on offer, there are wine-grape juices to sample, including Riesling, Spätburgunder, Huxelrebe and Merlot, as well as delicious German delicacies.

Decorated with colourful Berlin street art, Vinothek Berlin is an ideal photo spot. There are a series of guided tasting sessions where wine lovers can learn more about German wine from experts, with nine topics to be explored (including The Many Faces of Riesling, Grosses Gewächs Grand Cru Dry Riesling and Savour Aged Riesling, 1982–2012). Places are limited and and can be booked online via this link.

April is the time for SPECTACULAR South Africa, a month-long campaign celebrating South Africa’s National Day (also called Freedom Day) on 27 April, when Nelson Mandela was elected the first black president to lead the country in 1994.

The celebration has been on a smaller scale these past two pandemic years, but Wines of South Africa (WoSA), the organiser of the event, is excited to bring back the campaign in full swing, with this year marking its 10th anniversary.

Wines of South Africa (WoSA) are organising SPECTACULAR South Africa in Hong Kong again

Over 100 participating restaurants, wine retailers and online shops are offering various South African wine promotions during the month of April. A few dining highlights include the Simonsig Kaapse Vonkel Brut Rosé (Cap Classique) and biltong pairing at Champagne Bar at Grand Hyatt Hong Kong, the South African gastronomic excursion at Mirage Bar & Restaurant at Renaissance Hong Kong Harbour View Hotel, the South African wine-pairing journey at SKYE Roofbar & Dining at The Park Lane Hong Kong, the night dedicated to David & Nadia Wines’ magnums at Shady Acres and the all-you-can-taste South African wine event at mato. To indulge in full South African fare, head to either Africa Coffee & Tea or Call Me AL for South African wine-pairing dinners.

Foodie and Riesling, Hong Kong

For more casual tastings, drop by FRANCIS (wine flights), La Cabane (public tastings) or PD Jemmuelson (flights for Longridge Tasting Day on 28 April). Otherwise, you can order online from Wine Impala (Favourites Sampler Box) or pick up various South African wine at a discount at many online wine stores. Wine retailers and supermarkets including Watson’s Wine, Two More Glasses, Crushed Wines, Vynluna Wines, 3hreesixty and Market Place by Jasons are also running different promotions.

Selfie and IG savvy wine lovers should enter the SPECTACULAR South Africa photo competition organised by MyiCellar for a chance to win a South African gift basket. You can also vote for your favourite South African wine, with the three wines garnering the most votes offered at a discount.

Foodie and Riesling, Hong Kong

In addition, the SPECTACULAR South Africa Experience Store, a pop-up shop that debuted in 2021 to great fanfare, will be returning this year to Central Market from 24 April until 10 May. A collaboration between Wines of South Africa, Brand South Africa and the South African Consulate General in Hong Kong, the pop-up seeks to showcase some of the country’s preeminent, world-class exports. Chief amongst these are the nation’s wines (which South Africa has been producing for the past 364 years), biltong (the country’s most beloved snack) and rooibos tea (a native South African tea that’s rich in antioxidants).

The highlight of the pop-up is a series of themed tasting experiences. Wine lovers can explore the diversity of South African wine over a tasting of six wines, from South Africa’s signature grape varieties of Chenin Blanc and Pinotage to the classic premium wine and creative blends produced by young winemakers. There are 14 sessions covering 11 themes. These experiences will be conducted by wine professionals, and attendees will receive a wine voucher for use at the pop-up shop. There are limited seats, so book now – tickets can be booked online.

South Africa’s rich winemaking history includes Dutch, French, German and Italian influences. It embraces all the best traditions of Old World wines while still exploring New World styles. In the past two decades, South African wines have taken a quantum leap forward, featuring more and more innovative young winemakers. International wine critics have praised the creativity, originality and quality of South African wine and share the view that South Africa is the most dynamic and exciting New World wine country at the moment.

Whether you’ve been to South Africa, are planning a trip there or haven’t even thought about it yet – visit the South African pop-up shop and you will be convinced that the Rainbow Nation should be at the top of your must-travel list. I visited South Africa for first time in 1994 and have been back 15 times since then! I’m sure you’ll enjoy South Africa’s scenery, wine, food, hospitality and vibe as much as I do.

Uniquely South African, Pinotage was developed in 1925 by Professor Abraham Izak Perold, by crossing Pinot Noir and Cinsuat (known as Hermitage then). The aim was to produce a grape varietal that combined the best qualities of the parents and adapted to South Africa’s growing conditions.

The first bottled Pinotage was Lanzerac in 1959 using the grapes from Kanonkop. It wowed the world when the 1989 Kanonkop Pinotage took centre stage at the 1991 International Wine & Spirit Competition, when then-winemaker Beyers Truter won the title of International Winemaker of the Year.

In 1995, Pinotage Association was established. The three pillars of the Association are experimentation, sharing of knowledge and marketing. Unfortunately, some producers overworked the grapes like it was Cabernet Sauvignon and made highly-extracted, heavy Pinotage with burnt rubber notes, drawing negative comments from consumers, wine critics and even winemakers.

According to Beyers, who eventually became Chairman of Pinotage Association, quality of Pinotage made a U-turn some 15 years ago when winemakers, both young and experienced, finally had a better grasp of the varietal. The new generation of winemakers are now taking this grape variety to the next level with different interpretations. Pinotage has never been so exciting!

Pinotage is now in a phase where winemakers are focussing on specialisation, diversity and authenticity. Thanks to the varied topography of the Cape Winelands, Pinotage has different expressions depending on whether it is planted close to the ocean or up in the mountains. Single vineyard Pinotage reflects the terroir while old vine Pinotage shows depth and elegance.

Pinotage is versatile and can be made into Cap Classique, rosé, easy-drinking red and serious age-worthy wine that can complement various cuisines. A lighter approach in cellars allows the wine to reveal more of the Pinot Noir characters, while suitable oak treatment adds a touch of power to the wine without being aggressive. Its agreeable tannins go well with the sauces and spices used in Chinese cooking, while its fruity flavour supports the spicy herbs in Southeast and South Asian dishes.

There is indeed a wide spectrum of Pinotage. Kanonkop and L’Avenir represent the classic style, while at the other end is the new-generation winemaker Jacques de Klerk from Reverie who makes the more elegant style of Pinotage. Spioenkop from the cool Elgin wine region has a different expression of the grape variety and Bellingham The Bernard Series Bush Vine Pinotage sits in middle of the spectrum.

The second Saturday of October is the annual Pinotage Day where South African wineries rally wine lovers to celebrate this unique South African wine. Grand Hyatt Hong Kong, together with Wines of South Africa (WOSA), is organising the first Hong Kong Pinotage dinner on 8th October (Saturday) pairing a 5-course meal from Steakhouse with five very different styles of Pinotage. Come explore this versatile grape variety with your friends. Wine list, menu and tickets available from here. Limited seats only.

Just when we think wine pop-up stores may be taking a summer break, there comes another, and this one with a Hong Kong retro theme.

WineNow Pop-Up Fair 2022 is organised by Wine Now Monthly, a Chinese wine magazine founded in 1998. It adopted the Hong Kong 80s décor that strikes a chord with the magazine’s readers. It’s a cool way to travel back in time especially for those who haven’t experienced that golden era of Hong Kong first hand.

In terms of wine, it is like a market place where each vendor has his own table. When I was there, there were wines from China, France, Italy and Hungary, and some of them will change in the second half of the fair. For spirit lovers, there is a spirit table with gin and whiskies, including the limited edition of Hong Kong Whisky using the famous Hong Kong comics as label. Whisky lovers can join the workshops to learn more.

I was pleasantly surprised to spot a wine made by my winemaker friend Ian Dai from China. Last time we met was at his very boutique winery, Xaio Pu (小圃酿造) in Yunnan back in January 2020 when we could still travel without any restriction, and I remember we tasted the wine from barrel. Ian makes what people called ‘natural wine’ that uses no synthetic products and with minimal intervention. This wine, a blend of Chardonnay, Riesling and Petit Manseng has extended skin contact therefore the colour is darker than white wine. It is fresh, fragrant, pure with tea-like tannin, a far cry from the sometimes funky, off-putting natural wine.

Visitors are welcome to browse and shop wine, or they can buy a one-day tasting pass to try all the wine and spirits on offer. There are also games and of course lots of photo-op. Immerse yourself in the golden 80s of Hong Kong with your favourite glass of wine!

Hong Kong wine scene is certainly busy in summer. Following Spectacular South Africa in April, French GourMay in May and Riesling Weeks in June, now it’s the turn for California’s Sips of Summer Wine Month.

The highlight of the campaign is the Sips of Summer pop-up exhibition that features the significant events in the history of California wines, starting from 1849 to now. The first phase is ‘The Gold Rush’ where over 300,000 people went to California to try their luck on gold that also led to an increase in economic activities including a wine industry boom.

The second and third phases are ‘Prohibition‘ in 1920 and ‘Post-Prohibition‘ from 1930s to 1970s when the wine industry took a dive and revived again. The ‘Judgement of Paris’ era detailed the blind tasting of US against French wines in Paris where Californian wines were ranked the best in both white and red wine categories, establishing California as a world-class wine producing region.

‘Golden State of Mind’ focuses on today’s winegrowers and how they embrace innovation and sustainability.

Apart from history, Sips of Summer also brings visitors a taste of California’s iconic summer concerts ‘Music in the Vineyard’. During weekends, there will be live performances by artists Mansonvibes, Higgo Raj, and Luna is a Bep. There are limited seats only and rsvp is necessary. Even if you miss these live performances, you can still enjoy a special piece of music produced by Hong Kong composer Veronica Lee (Veegay). The piece, dedicated to the pop-up store, was inspired by California summers and wines, and will be played in-store.

A wine pop-up event is not completed without tasting. There will be various themed tastings led by wine professionals including sommelier Reeze Choi, ViuTV’s Cecilia Wong and wine educator Corinne Mui. Food columnist Walter Kei will also prepare a selection of delectable Cantonese bites to pair with the California wines.

There are more workshops and happenings at Sips of Summer and around town. Please visit their website for more information.

The post Rewriting Wine 101: Vinothek Berlin 2022 appeared first on Foodie.

Vinothek Berlin, the first German wine experience pop-up shop, debuted at Causeway Bay’s Fashion Walk last year with great fanfare. As part of Riesling Weeks Hong Kong, a campaign celebrating German wine, Vinothek Berlin has returned this month featuring exciting German wine, delicacies, seasonal produce and cultural experiences.

One of the highlights of Vinothek Berlin is the white asparagus and German wine workshop conducted by Wines of Germany, bringing this unique German culinary experience to Hong Kong for the first time. White asparagus is a German delicacy grown between mid-April and the end of June. Similar to wine grapes, the best white asparagus is grown in a cool climate with a long ripening season in order to develop its delicate flavour. Vinothek Berlin has flown in fresh white asparagus grown at a family-run farm in Lower Saxony in northern Germany, pairing it with three German wines. Each participant will receive a white asparagus hamper containing the asparagus, German Belana potatoes and hollandaise sauce. There are only three sessions available – on 9, 16 and 23 June – with limited seats.

In addition, the pop-up will run two classic German food- and wine-pairing workshops featuring Bavarian pork knuckle and a classic German sausage platter. Each dish will be paired with three German wines. There is also a fun and relaxing Junk Wednesday tasting, pairing German wine with nibbles (participants are also welcome to bring their own favourite snacks). The organiser is confident that versatile German wine can go with all kinds of dishes!

Serious wine lovers can join different in-depth guided tasting tours to learn more about German wine from experts. Topics include “The many faces of Riesling”, “Dry and GG (Grand Cru) Riesling”, “Aged Riesling (1976–2017)”, “Sparkling Riesling (including a first-time-release 2002 Sekt)”, “Not all whites are Riesling”, “Pinot Trio” and “German red wine”. All workshops and tastings can be booked here.

Vinothek Berlin features over 100 wines – German signature Riesling ranging from sparkling and dry to half-dry and sweet wine, Pinot Trio (Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir), German varieties such as Silvaner, Gewürztraminer and Dornfelder and international varieties including Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. Weingut Peter Lauer, a winery in Mosel that’s renowned for its aged Sekt (sparkling wine made in the traditional champagne method), will launch two wines – Grand Reserve Sekt Brut Nature 1984 and Grand Reserve Brut 2002 – at the pop-up.

In addition to wine, there are also handcrafted gins and liqueurs, quirky German soft drinks and gourmet apple juice made from different apple varieties – including Rouge, where even the flesh is red in colour. German food bites include Black Forest ham, Obatzda cheese spread, pâté and traditional snacks like pretzels and Lorenz Erdnußlocken (corn chips with peanuts and spices). Zwiesel wine glasses and wine-infused soap gift sets are just a few of the lifestyle products on offer.

Similar to last year, Vinothek Berlin 2022 is decorated with colourful Berlin street art, drawing inspiration from the German capital’s freewheeling, creative core. The many unique products and happenings at Vinothek Berlin allow customers to enjoy the Berlin experience without travelling to Germany.

Launched in 2013 and organised by Wines of Germany, Riesling Weeks Hong Kong is an annual month-long celebration of German wine in June. Together with wine suppliers, the campaign aims to introduce more German wine to HK wine lovers. Leading hotels and restaurants are offering German wine and food pairings, while retailers and wine clubs are hosting wine-tasting events. This year is the 10th anniversary of the event, with Riesling Weeks becoming a much-anticipated campaign by wine lovers.

As in previous years, several Riesling Weeks’ participating restaurants are featuring white asparagus and German wine-pairing menus. White asparagus is a German delicacy grown between mid-April and the end of June. Three outlets at Conrad Hong Kong are offering various white asparagus and German wine promotions, including a delicious four-course white asparagus degustation dinner menu at Brasserie on the Eighth. Golden Leaf is preparing an eight-course white asparagus dinner paired with Weingut Dr Loosen wines from Mosel on Thursday, 9 June, while Garden Café is featuring creative Riesling Weeks cocktails paired with German canapés, plus a German Riesling tasting, on Thursday, 2 June.

At the newly opened Heimat by Peter Find, German chef-owner Peter Find has created various asparagus dishes to pair with different German wines, as well as “Riesling afternoons” for customers to discover Riesling from different wine regions.

If you want a drink with a view, head to Sunset Grill at Sheraton Tung Chung for its white asparagus with Ibérico ham, Riesling sabayon foam and finger lime paired with a glass of dry Riesling from Mosel while admiring the sunset.

Riesling might be the signature wine of Germany, but the country is also famous for its Pinot. Germany is the world’s third-largest producer of Pinot Noir (Spätburgunder in German) after France and the USA, the second-largest producer of Pinot Gris (Grauburgunder) after Italy and the number-one producer of Pinot Blanc (Weissburgunder).

This year, wine lovers will have the chance to savour probably the first of its kind wine and food pairing in Hong Kong – the German Pinot Trio. Cuisine Cuisine at The Mira Hong Kong is presenting a seven-course Cantonese menu paired with four Reserve and Grand Cru Pinots from Weingut Salwey in Baden. At the other side of the harbour, Whey, which serves modern European cuisine with Singaporean influences, is featuring a pairing menu with both German Riesling and Pinot.

German wine, especially Riesling, is versatile and can pair with a wide range of dishes, from a spicy Thai curry to a juicy steak. Food and wine lovers can try the different German wine pairings at Mott 32 (Chinese), Aaharn (Thai), Hansik Goo (Korean), FRANCIS (Middle Eastern), Amelia (European), Bâtard (French) and Beefbar (steak). The Aubrey at the Mandarin Oriental will be hosting a Riesling class every Saturday in June, pairing five glasses of Riesling with Japanese snacks.

For those who simply want to enjoy the wine, there’s a German wine buffet at Mirage Bar & Restaurant at Renaissance Hong Kong Harbour View Hotel and a Riesling tasting set at The Fine Wine Experience at K11 MUSEA to look forward to. Wine retailers around town, including Enoteca, Ginsberg+Chan and Watson’s Wine, will also be running German wine promotions, as will online wine retailers. The full list of participants can found on the Riesling Weeks HK website.

Riesling Weeks ran the first German wine experience pop-up store, Vinothek Berlin, last year with much fanfare. It will return to Causeway Bay this year with classic German food and wine workshops and some hard-to-find German goodies. We will report more on this pop-up in the next article, so stay tuned!

Ever since Bubble Wonderland set up the first Hong Kong wine pop-up shop last March at Fashion Walk, the Causeway Bay area has turned into a Mecca for similar projects. In the past 12 months, there’s been Whisky Live, Vinothek Berlin, Spectacular South Africa and the just-finished Spanish Wine Passion. Now, Bubble Wonderland is back at Fashion Walk with a new name – Sparkling Summer.

Pop-up shops are attractive because they can offer a holistic experience rather than just wine. In addition to wine, which is the main theme of all these pop-ups, there are food and lifestyle products. Some even offer travel and cultural experiences. With travel restrictions still in place, consumers can find solace at these pop-ups. People who aren’t interested in wine don’t usually visit wine shops, but they might be attracted by these pop-ups because of their diverse offers. The pop-ups act as brand ambassadors of wine and the countries they represent.

With Sparkling Summer, over 100 sparkling wines from major wine countries are being showcased, including champagne and crémant from France, Franciacorta and Prosecco from Italy, cava from Spain and Cap Classique from South Africa, plus bubblies from Australia, New Zealand and Japan and sparkling sake.

The highlight is the sabrage zone. Sabrage is the technique of opening a bottle of sparkling wine using a sabre. This activity is in collaboration with Bollinger champagne house, famous for being James Bond’s preferred champers.

On weekends, Sparkling Summer conducts lifestyle workshops such as champagne and sparkling sake pairings with caviar and fragrance candle workshops featuring Bern and Atelier Cologne. I can’t think of a better way of spending a few relaxing hours in the bubbly and fragrance worlds, forgetting about the worries of today.

This pop-up consists of two phases. In May, Sparkling Summer will join forces with French GourMay, the local food and wine festival dedicated to French gastronomy, for Rhômantic Bistronomy. Bistronomy refers to French bistro fare using seasonal produce cooked with haute-cuisine methods in order to create a deliciously accessible dining experience. This year, diners can enjoy bistronomy dishes with wine from Côtes du Rhône, a wine region in southern France and the partner of French GourMay.

From now until 29 May, you can visit Sparkling Summer at Shop 2, 2–4 Kingston Street, Fashion Walk, Causeway Bay (opposite Food Street) for a taste of sparkles from around the world and enjoy hearty wines from Côtes du Rhône. The pop-up is open daily from 12–7pm. Activities and workshops can be found here.

The pop-up trend is going strong in Hong Kong. Vinothek Berlin, the German wine pop-up that debuted last year, will return to Causeway Bay in June, at the same Kingston Street location as Sparkling Summer. Stay tuned for more information!

Hong Kong has been combating COVID for more than two years, and this fifth wave has hit us especially hard, leaving us more exhausted than ever. South Africa experienced the same magnitude of disruption in 2020, and the people of that nation might understand what Hong Kong is going through now.

Wines of South Africa (WOSA) is using the SPECTACULAR South Africa campaign in April to say cheers to Hong Kong.

This year’s annual SPECTACULAR South Africa campaign will feature a #SACheersHK photo competition. Consumers just need to share a photo of themselves enjoying South African wine, either alone or with friends, on their Facebook or Instagram page with the hashtags #SACheersHK and #WOSAHK. The WOSA team will choose the 10 photos that convey the most upbeat messages. The winners will each receive a South African hamper packed with three bottles of wines, limited-edition WOSA tumblers and popular South African snacks.

The photo competition is open to anyone over the age of 18. All photos must be posted by 30 April and multiple entries are allowed. The winners will be announced by 10 May. More information can be found on the WOSA HK website, WOSAHK Facebook page and @wosahk Instagram page.

South Africa is the oldest wine country in the New World, with 363 years of winemaking history. Its wine is diverse and exciting, and its quality rivals some of the greatest wines from around the world. Participating wine shops are putting together different SPECTACULAR South Africa wine packs to help wine lovers to explore these South African gems, including:

  • AA Badenhorst six bottles Discovery Case from Ginsberg+Chan Wine Merchants Asia (AA Badenhorst is one of the Swartland revolutionaries that transformed the region’s wine landscape)
  • South African wine hampers from Springbok Wines that include various South African wines and other goodies
  • Impala Sampler from Wine Impala for a delicious introduction to the Cape Winelands
  • Curated gift with any six bottles of South African wine from Crushed Wines, a boutique wine shop focused on small-batch wines from around the world
  • South African curated wine box from La Cabane Wine Cellar, a natural wine shop in Central
  • 5+1 South African wine pack from Toast for Wine, with a bottle of Leopard’s Leap Pinotage Shiraz given for free with any purchase of five bottles of South African wine
  • 7 x South African wine packs from wine’n’things at 20% off

In addition, Mirage Bar & Restaurant at Renaissance Hong Kong Harbour View Hotel will be offering a South African wine buffet with an unlimited selection of Mannenberg Wines for 90 minutes, while La Cabane Bistro will serve a selection of South African wine by the glass, made with minimal intervention.

Other online and retail wines shops are also offering special discounts on South African wine during the month of April. The full list of offers will be updated here.

It’s harvest time in South Africa now. Although winemakers are busy, they are keen to share their harvest moments and wine with HK wine lovers. WOSA is planning a series of Zoom tastings with them, and the schedule will be shared on the WOSA website and Facebook.

In the meantime, Hong Kong’s SOMM ACE will host two happy-hour sessions on South African wine over Zoom: South African Chenin Blanc on Saturday, 16 April from 5–6pm and South African red on Saturday, 30 April from 5–6pm. For enquiries and tickets, click here.

Let South Africa bring you smiles and sunshine this April!
