Though OpenRice counts only around 15 Portuguese restaurants in Hong Kong, Portuguese cuisine is gaining popularity in the city, influenced by the heritage of its neighbour Macau, a former Portuguese colony. Here at Foodie, we can’t get enough of the salty, sharp flavours of this European cuisine.

It’s these flavours that are being celebrated at the upcoming Sardine Festival, on from Aug. 29 till Sep. 1 at Central’s waterfront AIA Vitality Park. The festival is a tribute to the cuisine of Portugal.

Grilled sardines, a staple Portuguese plate, star at the event. Also up for tasting are traditional Portuguese bites including chouriço (grilled sausage), caldo verde (kale and potato soup), piri-piri chicken, and pastéis de nata (Portuguese custard tarts) – which give Hong Kong’s egg tarts a run for their money.

Of course, a Portuguese event isn’t complete without wine aplenty, so be sure to indulge in the festival’s Porto wine tour. Live music and top DJs from Lisbon are on board too.

One-day ticket prices are HKD80 for adults and HKD50 for seniors and kids over 10. Each ticket includes a complimentary glass of wine. This is definitely a family-friendly affair, and kids under 10 are free.
